are the winners pre-determined, or do they just play it out circumstantially?

I'm in the business. Yes, the outcomes are predetermined, but we do find the word "fake" to be a bit derogatory as it undermines what we do. There is great risk in pro wrestling and the pain is real. Generally, a match is "called" rather than scripted, especially with more experienced workers. We usually go over a match before hand and pretty much determine the course of events in the ring...but, the finish is already planned. Sometimes a wrestler very early in his career will follow a pre-planned move for move match..I did in my first match, but my more experienced opponent still called it in the ring. I have no objection to people knowing that what we do is a pre-determined show..but, again that word "fake" is not one that any of us are highly favorable of.

The winners are pre-determined by the bookie backstage. There have been instances where the winner of the match was determined minutes prior to the match starting. WCW's Eric Bischoff was famous for that.

What?! It is so real! nah, just kiddin'.

They are predetermined. The whole ordeal is a sort of mix between a ballet and a soap opera. You have physical performers in front of a large crowd acting out new scenes every time. Some people watch it knowing that it is scripted, but they like it for the same reason someone might like a soap opera. In the end it's entertainment.

Man, I hate it when people say wrestling is "fake"..... Yes, the outcomes are pre-determined, but to call it "fake"? The moves are real, sure the punches and kicks are a little bit off some times, but the "high spots", like goin' thru tables, jump'n off ladders, the blood... all real! Watch the Hell in a Cell match with Undertaker vs. Foley, where Foley gets thown off the top of the cell...twice... and tell me thats fake... watch the Summerslam match with Shane McMahon vs. Kurt Angle years ago, where Shane gets thown thru the glass staging.... twice... ohhh that's fake.... whatever! Ask Darrin Drozdov (Droz).... how fake wrestling is.... hell, the poor guy is paralized for god's sake! ....And the late great Owen Hart... don't even get me started there...The wrestlers put their bodies on the line everytime they step foot in the ring, for our entertainment..... simply put..... if you dont like it, dont watch it!

To add to Triple 6's answer. One of the most notables EVER for that change minutes prior to a match was Vince McMahon telling Bret "The Hitman" Hart he was going to lose to HBK aka Shawn Michaels i believe if memory serves me correctly was at Wrestlemania not sure which one. However, to answer the question, yes, its predetermined who will win the match before they go out. Also, in some cases they will determine who will be disqualified or tell them to disqualify themselves by doing something as such hitting a referee when they are not suppose to.

It's funny how people are quick to point out how unrealistic wrestling is, but then they'll watch hours and hours of soap operas and movies...sounds kinda hypocritical to me!

But yes, there are story lines that are followed to entertain people. Generally, the only part that is "scripted" is who wins and loses. The rest of the match is basically on the fly, unless you have a couple of green guys who don't know how to put a match together to save their lives.
