The difference is that a column can be a structural support for a building, etc, or it can stand by itself as in a monument, memorial, etc.
A pillar can only be a a support. "pillar" is , however sometimes misused, where the word column would be correct.

Pillar - A tall solid piece of stone, wood, or metal used to support part of a building.
