Yes, I know that it's because "they are fat" but what is it about fat on a woman that revolts a man?
If you want to rephrase the question, why do men prefer thinner and toned women?

And I know I'm generalizing when I put this label upon all men but I have come to believe that it's actually quite a well-spread opinion.

Well the men who get angry at fat women are not just mad at fat women they are pretty much mad at most women, fat women just happen to make a convenient target. And since being fat is something people notice right away it is a hard target to miss. [Pun Fully Intended]

What are the men angry at?

Women who don’t meet their ideal of how women should look, or act, or be. You see this over and over again as men rant about the way women dress, or the way they smell, or women’s independence, or women’s sexual orientation, or women’s sexual mores. The list goes on and on.

The reason fat women piss them off more than other women is because the men somehow feel that fat women are fat just to spite them. That women somehow are obligated to be eye candy for them and they get mad when there are women out there who don’t feel compelled to be that.

And they get raging angry because the fat women who don’t feel bad because they don’t fit some man’s narrow concept of beauty nor the need to conform to that concept dont feel they are ugly just because they are fat.

If men see women as having an obligation to be pretty for them, isn’t and then she isn’t contrite for her choice to ignore that obligation, the men see red.

Not all men like skinny women. It depends on the culture.

If you look at paintings from the Rennaisance, you will see that the ideal female body was much heavier than it is today.

Even today, men in certain parts of the world, like Africa and South America, are more attracted to heavier women.

After the Women's Liberation Movement in the 70s, the ideal female became thinner and thinner, and today most models are anorexic. This is because men were threatened by women's equality and wanted to make them smaller and therefore weaker. At the same time, men's ideal body image became larger and more muscular. Just compare male movie stars and action figures from the 50s to ones of today.

Natural selection has shaped our idea of beauty since the beginning of time. Thinking scientifically a thinner woman would be more physically able to take care of problems and run from danger. Being obese is connected to many diseases which also would detract from a woman's "attractiveness". Its society itself that shapes and creates general opinions all of which change over time. You never know, in the future it might be considered "hot" to have a double or triple chin and a few flabs to jiggle.

Some men fall into this category, but many do not. My personal opinion (feel free to disagree) is that women are more sensitive to men's comments about their weight than vice versa. This may give the APPEARANCE that men are more obsessed with weight than they actually are.

We seem to be making a shift from being "weight conscious" to being "health and fitness conscious." That's a good societal shift. It means we're more concerned with the length and quality of one's life rather than the effect of gravity.

It used to be that fat women were viewed as beautiful, because being fat meant that you were able to afford a lot of food (i.e. you had money). Nowadays, it is a greater sign of wealth to be skinny, because of all those expensive diets, gyms, and surgeries.

There are, however, some men that think fat women are sexy. Really it's just a matter of opinion.

people tend not to like "fat" people because they give the impression, by their indifference to their own body and appearance, that they aren't to be trusted with any sort of control, emotional or otherwise, over yours. But when I use fat as a description here, I'm talking about a woman who's 5'2" and a size 14 and up.

But the modern image of "fat," tends to include women with just a normal amount of body fat, and that's what I prefer. I don't like the over-exercised women that resemble nothing so much as teenage boys with their clothes off.

It's because men are conditioned by society, and the media, to think of thin women as attractive. In the past, when fat women were considered by society to be sexy, the majority of men desired them. It's all about socialization and culture

We tend to be with people that we share things in common with. For example, if you don't smoke or do drugs you will find your self with some who also shares the same values.

The same also may be true about fitness and appearance. I know for myself, who is in good shape I find it hard to be with some who is over weight, only because I value a healthy lifestyle.
