if your face comes off with the makeup when you are washing, it's definitely a knock-off

It can be quite difficult to tell -
1. If the price is too goo to be true, its fake (unless your buying from a department store/boots etc)
2. The packaging is never the same, they are copied so they're practically the same as genuine makeup and probably not noticable to the buyer until you compare the two. Look for how things are spelt as this is often missed as when your just having a brief look you only really take in the colours and the layout of the design on the packaging. Check the print quality too.
Check for trademarks, bar codes (alot of fake goods dont have bar codes) and if its designer, check the logo...does it look like the quality you'd expect from a designer?
3. If your buying from a store and your unsure as to whether they're fake....ask to test it, go away find a store that you trust and find a tester of the same product and compare the two
4. Check the quality of the product & the packaging of the actual item you are buying. Alot of sellers (those selling fake goods) actually buy the real item and use this as tester so your fooled into believing it is the genuine thing. Check the item your buying rather than the actual tester.
Fake goods are often made from ingredients you wouldnt even dream of putting on your skin/hair & made in someones shed, its simple just dont buy anything thats dirt cheap! Try and find an alternative from a cheaper brand, often a stores own brand is just as good as that of something twice the price.
Sometimes it can be that an item has been discontinued or its an end of season item and this is the reason for its cheapness.
If your buying from a market it will probably be fake or stolen! Sometimes you can get lucky as people are selling unwated gifts etc (my friend got a genuine d&g bag for £30 as it was a present to someone from an ex boyfriend and she wanted to get rid asap!)
You can always check with the brand (by contact them via email/telephone) as products always have a tracking number from the factory they were made!

The only way to be sure is to buy them in proper shops. If they're dirt cheap on a market stall somewhere they'll almost certainly be either fakes or stolen. As a general rule of thumb for anything - if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!
