Because people respond to the "familiar." Even if you don't recognize the "voice" you've heard it before and that opens you up to new ideas, makes you more comfortable than hearing it from someone new. This is a very, very old thing going back to radio days in the '20s and '30s and now days people like Madonna and Julia Roberts can get paid almost as much for a voice-over as if they'd been in the commerical. In other words, it pays well.

Celebs, like the rest of us common folk, sometimes have to "stretch a dollar" and do a little moonlighting to make ends meet. For them, it's an easy fast way to catch a few couple of thousands of dollars by doing voice-overs for consumer products. Compared to an audience event, concert or movie project, compensation for voice overs are merely a small fraction in payment.
Sports celebs, however, endorse consumer products just so to heap a few thousand ( actually a LOT of thousands ) of $$$$ in their Swiss accounts; after all: greed IS good, right?
And advertising wunderkinds all think sports star endorsements really will catch our attentions. Personally, sports star endorsements really put me off even looking at the product. Thank God for TiVo!!!

It is not new and companies pay millions because many people are obsessed with celebrities and they think, "Hey! Dennis Leary Drinks Bud....therefore, I should drink it"

Big $ for little work.
I'm not sure it's a new thing but I've been noticing that a lot, too.
I like Gene Hackman as the announcer for Home Depot! =)

They get paid a lot and so does the editor of the voice over!! It is easier and more clear to do a voice over and edit it, and put the background music and your basically done!!

They must need the work,
or perhaps they really like the product,
or maybe they just like the million $$$ they get for opening their mouths.
