Which church? If you mean the Roman Church (who were the bad guys in the movie) they have been hoping it would go away, just as they have with the (non-fictional) finds of undicovered Christian documents dating from biblical times. There have been a few open denunciations by the Vatican, but mostly they have tried not to let it became a subject for controversy.

The roman church denounced it as falsehood. (which it is) and several countries refused to air it.

they feel offended because they think thats a lie and he is destroying Christ and many readers DONT KNOW what in the hell DOES FICTION mean so they misinterpret fiction into facts!!!!!!!!!

well Christians didn't react as bad as those who protested wildly in the street when a newspaper in Denmark published the "caricature" of a famous Arab ( u know wat i am talking about)
