It seems to me that Christmas Eve is a more solemn, special time which is to be spent with loved ones. The goal is to be in place by evenfall, to gather around the Yule log with the family. The next day is a celebration, but more about the feast and the presents than the warm glow of the fire. In many European households, they open the gifts on Christmas Eve, but American kids usually have to wait until light of day on the 25th.
