Television is a medium that has still the potential to improve our society. Television has the ability to inform, educate, and entertain large numbers; only the internet has similar power. As both television and internet are personalized to an individual's taste, it is the viewers' choice to discern what is a rewarding experience for them. Television has the power to draw empathy from the viewer in ways that print can not. Televised scenes from starving, war-torn nations are more influential than a simple article on cnn or nytimes.
Television in the United States may be a difficult medium to rationalize as a positive influence on our lives, but the US has many positives when compared on a world scale. Though other nation's news sources and documentaries are considered more objective and infomative (in particular the BBC), Hollywood provides television on a scale that is incomparable. The sheer budget of shows such as LOST, 24, and ER can not be matched in foreign studios. Though special effects and high budget stunts do not necessarily corrrelate with quality, variety in entertainment and the ability to watch film quality television on a weekly basis is a positive for viewers.
Sport is also a field that is best conveyed to the public via television. The importance of sport on our society is evident. It allows individuals to indentify in a positive way with a larger social group, be it the city they live in or their nation. Competition is an inherent part of the human spirit. The ideals of good sportsmanship, fair and objective ruling, and graciousness in victory and defeat are applicable in all aspects of human life. The spirit of the Olympics is the prime example of the importance of sport not only on an individual, but geopolitical level. These events can only be broadcast to the public via television.
While television is primarily used to entertain, it is absurd to say that entertainment is not a necessary, beneficial, and redeeming aspect of human society.

Some of television is bad and some is good. Not everything will be perfect you just have to watch what you think is good for you. Tv can be useful and important at times, like to watch the news and keep updated with the world. And it is great for entertainment and not being bored to death.

It's not all bad. It can be used as a great visual aid in schools. And as for the home, we all need a little R and R time to regroup and have a little fun. It can be used to bring families together too to a certain extent. I love curling up with my daughter, dogs, and husband on a snowy afternoon to watch a movie. TV is only bad when it is abused.

Not inherently. Its like any other thing. Too much TV can be bad, yes. Most shows today are crud and filled with vulgar, sexual crap that nobody needs to see. However, there are good shows out there and they can be enjoyable to watch as long as you're not spending your entire life in front of the TV. But it isn't a necessitty. You aren't missing out on any great part of life by not having one and I know a few people who decided it wasn't worth it.

Like any other thing, it can be fun and good when kept in proportion.

Of course not. It is entertainment and a source of information . It is, like all media, a venue for education, and communication.
