I even have an 06 mercury milan and it gets approximately 26 mpg in the city. I even have not had a project with it and its an outstanding automobile. i paid 25000 for the automobile and its completely loaded (nicely each and every thing yet sunroof). my bro has a 08 scion and he loves it. i know it gets over 20 mpg in the city truthfully. his became approximately 22000 completely loaded and its a tremendously candy looking automobile.

It sounds like you are a little bit off. I have a 2.0L and I get about 40mpg and about 395 miles to a 12 gallon tank. You might have a fuel injection problem. It could just be that you need a to have your fuel injectors cleaned. Maintenance on a car is very important. If you haven't gotten your oil changed and have went over 3,000 miles you will also see a decrease in mpg. I'm going to say that b/c of the year of the car that you have dirty fuel injectors and need them to be cleaned. Visit a Goodyear or a local shop and get it done. Also, replace your spark plugs and make sure they are properly gapped or they won't fire. Don't go to the store and buy one of those do it yourself kits b/c they are a waste of money. Take care of your car, it will take care of you.

You're aunt is correct with the fact you should be getting 27-30 mpg with that size engine. 20mpg is a bit of a worry. (sell it)

sounds right to me, if you drive down the highway at 65 with the cruise on you should get up to 28, in town flooring it from every stop light will get you about 12. if the check ngine lights not on and the spark plugs aren't worn to the stub then you most likely have no problem.
20s not bad, my truck gets 5/5; 5 gallons to start it and 5 gallons to drive 2 blocks to work(one way)

I got a 2.4 in a Chrylser van - auto - air - PS. city 17 -20 highway 20-26. depends on load nad how much stopping.
City trips around for me are very short - 2 -5 miles. really eats up gas in the van.

If you drive it hard (take off like a bat out of hell from red lights) you're going to get crap mileage.
Otherwise, check the following:
Air filter. if your air filter is plugged, your engine is going to burn rich, this wastes fuel.
Spark plugs. If your spark plugs are fouled (dirty) or worn, they won't burn fuel efficiently, this will waste fuel.
Injectors. If they are dirty, they won't atomize the fuel right, this will also waste fuel.
Tires. If they are underinflated, your car has to work harder to roll forward. This wastes fuel.

In the city, yes. Highway - no. It also depends on your driving habits. If you floor it, you get what you want.
