They can live, but they shouldn't be allowed to speak. And if they do, nobody should listen.

I love that line in Donnie Darko. "I mean, you know, didn't your dad like, stab your mom?"

Sure you are. But the problem is that in grade school and maybe in middle school the teachers don't like it because students use it incorrectly. The same is true of the word and. So, here is the scoop on using it correctly. First, you know that the words and but or and nor are conjunctions? That is, they join things. But, did you that they join things that are equal. Like, "dogs and cats" are equal in the sense that they are both nouns and "Jack fell and Jill laughed" are equal because they are both simple sentences. These equalizing conjunctions signal the reader that things that are joined are equal. But, there is another whole group of conjunctions that signal the reader that the things joined are not equal. These are used to join sentences and nothing much else. The most popular ones are since, when, until, after, because, if, although and as. So, take Jack and Jill again, for instance. We can join them using because. "Jack fell because Jill laughed." These are not equal because one is a cause and the other is an effect. They are different types of events. The first half can stand alone. It is independent. The other part is dependent. It depends on the first part to make sense. You can't just say "because Jill laughed" and expect people to know what it means. But, the really neat thing about these type of unequalizing conjunctions is that you can turn the sentence back/front as long as you put a comma where the period used to be. So, the correct sentence is "Because Jill laughed, Jack fell." There is your sentence starting starting with because. Because it was such a long answer, I was sorry I asked the question.

Nope. When I'm queen of the universe, they will be beaten down. Right after the people who overuse the word "like" - they have to go first.
