I thought maybe at Shotgun he can't do trick plays or has less options, I remember there was something on the rule book but I can't find it. I have money on this question at work?

I'm not sure if this is a serious question but when he's in shotgun, he's five yards in the backfield

Instead of standing directly behind the center and just being "handed" the ball from between the centers' legs, the quarterback about five or so yards behind the center and it is tossed to him instead.

The main advantage to this is that the quarterback has more time to see the defense coming at him and can even make a better pre-snap read of what the defense is about to do.

But, there are a few weaknesses, too. When you're in shotgun, you've pretty much told the defense you're going to pass. Sometimes, teams will use this to their advantage to run a draw play, but it isn't common. Also, the center has to snap it well. If the snap is off, the quarterback may fumble it or it may take an extra moment or two to get an off target ball.

Simply remember that a quarterback is in the shotgun formation if he is not directly under the center to receive the ball when the play starts. The distance is usually between three to six steps further back from the line of scrimmage than the traditional quarterback under center position.
This formation is primarily used to allow the quarterback a little more time before the defense is upon him - you will see it used a lot if the defense has a strong pass rush. It also gives him a little wider perspective on what is going on before him - different angles to view.

The Quarterback has less of a chance to get sacked if in Shotgun form than under center......A Lineman can easily miss a block to let Defensive Linemen get to QB if under center.

Some teams that use the Shotgun do so because:

1) It gives the QB time to look at all his progressions downfield

2) He may be too short to see over Linemen

3) QB may be comfortable being in shotgun form when in College and why change something that was successful in the NFL

When your in shotgun form you are pretty much conceding the fact that you are going to pass. The reason they use this formation is because there is no time wasted dropping back, you just get the ball from the snap and your ready to throw saving a split second.

Under center means the quaterback puts his hands UNDER THE CENTER. Shotgun, well, if he's not under center he's in shotgun. Watch a game you should tell the difference.

When the QB is undercenter, he is in a pro formation. If he is in the shotgun, he is in a spread formation.

No you knuckleheads. He probably wants to know what the strategy behind the two positions is.
