In the "Harry Potter" books, he's described as having "messy black hair, knobbly knees, emerald eyes, a lightning bolt scar, and glasses." It's a bit of a character trademark that he has round black glasses (which were originally taped across the bridge from where his cousin Dudley had punched him and broken them). Also, his father (James Potter) had bad eyesight and wore glasses; he most likely inherited his vision from him.

JK needed to make harry uncool at school so that you would feel sorry for him. Untidy and old clothes, Hair that grows long and out of shape, his small weak stature and his broken glasses. Most people would find this appearance as geeky.
This makes harry unhappy but when he finds out that he's a wizard it happens that a lot of magic folk look more odd then he does.

He needs to wear glasses, most likely due to his lens being the wrong shape which causes the focal point of the light to be in front of, or behind, the retina. However, it could be due to his eyeball being the wrong shape, which is called astigmatism.

if you watch the movies you will see that his father wears glasses and that most people that wear glasses have bad vision problems that run in the family. He got his bad eyes from his dad.

I think they made his character wear glasses so that the "geeky" people could identify with him and bullies in school will be like "hey people with glasses aren't so bad".
There really is no other reason for it, because logically he could cure his eyesight with his powers...
