To be honest, World of Warcraft is the best MMORPG on the market today, although I am considering taking a break and trying EQ2 for a month (just for a little variety). Not sure if I will though. What I don't like about EQ2 is the fact that it is by Sony...and they have a knack for ruining games. EQ1 was solid, and still is from what I hear (as a game...not sure on the player-base). Star Wars Galaxies came out and was awesome, but extremely buggy (it should have been in beta still, in my opinion). Now, instead of fixing the bugs, they changed their entire system to fit standard MMORPG format, instead of keeping the great system they had. Ruined. Then they bought Matrix Online. A friend I know was playing that and one of the best parts was the live GM-run events. When Sony bought them, he said that they put a hold on the events until they get some bugs fixed with the game (which they are notorious for not fixing). I do not know if they have resumed a strong GM-run live event system, but I would doubt it. Ruined. Then EQ2 came out. I really liked it when I played it. I had a level 27 Templar. What I liked was the fact that I chose one class, then at a certain level I choose a path to go and I become one of 3 other classes, then at another level range I get another choice in which path to take. Now, from what I hear, you can just start out as any of those third tier classes, which removes the cool aspect of the character advancement (to me). But despite that, I could still go back for a month...
But WOW has done almost everything right. The system requirements are lower (yeah, the graphics are not as good, but to me that is irrelevant). The quests give good experience throughout the game. The items from the quests are good as well, although you may not be able to use everything. The craft system is...eh...average. I'm not impressed by it (Star Wars Galaxies is by FAR the best crafting game I have seen...EQ2's crafting is better than WOW as well). It's not bad...just not impressive to me. The character advancement is great, with the talent system (once you hit level 10). Excellent for customizing your character as you get 1 talent point every level and the talents are mostly useful. The PVP is excellent, but I can't comment much on it since I do not enjoy PVP.
So to sum up, I'd suggest World of Warcraft.

Personally I'd go with World of Warcraft. I played EQ since the second expansion, and went to EQ2 when it came out. EQ2 is really exciting for a while, however the world starts to lose it's appeal after a few weeks of playing.
Also if you're into PvP (plaver versus player) Warcraft is definitely a choice you want to make. There are so many different avenues you can take for PvP. 3 Battlegrounds, World PvP, and in the expansion permanent team based PvP in a gladiator-like colliseum.
World of Warcraft lets you customize the way your character fights. Every class has three talent trees that you can invest in, and there are virtually limitless combinations that will enable you to play just the way you want.
Regardless, the choice is yours. Check both out and see which you have a taste for

If you're in the uk world of warcraft do a trial period cd rom for £1.69 with 16 hours play. try that though I dont know if everquest 2 does a similar offer - maybe that says something about WOW?

Listen to Guvo. He hits it right on the head all the way down. Loved Star Wars Galaxies, but they screwed that royally. Played EQ2 and it was fun for a bit, but lost it's allure, played for about 5 months. Going on my 3rd year of WOW and though at times I have gotten bored, there always seems to be something that brings me back.
Don't think there can be any other answer. Right now, WOW is the best out there.
