The two franchises actually both moved to LA. The Clippers were originally in San Diego and the Lakers were originally in Minnesota. The market for NBA basketball in Los Angeles is obviously high, because without the laws of supply and demand there wouldn't be two teams there. The market can ultimately support two teams, so they're there. It's the same reason the metropolitan New York area has two teams (Knicks, Nets) in the NBA and three teams (Islanders, Rangers, Devils) in the NHL.

The Clipper franchise started in Buffalo as the Braves. Its owner (John Y. Brown), swapped teams with the Boston Celtics owner (Irv Levin). The Braves were not drawing in Buffalo despite having superstars like Bob McAdoo. Levin moved the team to San Diego in 1978 where they stayed for six mediocre seasons. Around 1982. Donald Sterling, a developer from L.A. bought the team. In 1984 the Clippers moved to their present location. And now you know THE REST OF THE STORY.

Cali has 4 basketball teams which is insane, Lakers, Clippers, Warriors and Kings. They don't need that many, and Texas doesn't need 3 teams. The fan bases are huge out there though and they bring in lots of money so they can afford multiple teams.

I agree w/ the second guy. Its all about the market. LA has two basketball teams, and New York has about 20 pro teams.
