That is a sad commentary on life nowadays -- I can remember when I first purchased my home (and I was here on Active Duty -- a Single Woman with no children) ... and EVERY (and I mean EVERY) neighbor had their homes lit with LOTS of Christmas Lights -- Windows, Doors, Patios, Rooflines, and just about everywhere.
For me, doing the Christmas Lighting and Indoor/Outdoor Decorating is a guilty pleasure -- I've worked hard for so many, many years, at Christmastime, I feel that I DESERVE to Splurge a Bit .. and put out the Christmas Displays.
Then after a short disaster of a marriage .. I kept working, and became a Long-Term Single Parent (to two disabled children). They ENJOYED the Christmas Displays ... and their friends on the School Bus (no matter where I was stationed) enjoyed seeing the Christmas Displays -- I purchased new things every year (as additions), and just enjoyed putting the displays out.
I Retired from the Military back to the home I bought so long ago ... and still did the Displays every year. But ... as my neighborhood changed (there were mostly Retirees when I purchased here) ... to families ... less and less the homes would have Christmas Displays ...
Now after TWO Major Hurricane Seasons (and multiple major hurricanes hitting my area in 2004-2005), there are even fewer doing the Christmas Displays .. but ... FINALLY as an Empty-Nesting Single Retiree ... I STILL do my outdoor Christmas Display (but now that I am older and alone ... it is less Climbing and more on ground level only).

Growing up we just put up the Christmas tree. I was always so jelouse of ll the houses that went all out for Christmas, with the lights and the elaborate decorations. Now that I have a child we go all out with the decorating. I just belive that some people don't have the time and don't want to make the time to do it. But thats okay because there are some neighbors that REALLY make up for that!

I usually decorate the outside of my house for Christmas but we have moved into a duplex and there are no outlets outside anywhere. The closest outlet to the outside is through my front door down the hallway and I would have a good 30 feet of extension cord down my hallway and my entry way. I put my tree in front of the window and leave the curtains open and put window clings in the windows and did up my front door but sadly no lights this year. My sister on the other hand starts decorating in October and tapes each and every light so that they all point the same direction and she is very anal about it all but it looks great. Sorry your neighbors suck! Merry Christmas

Yep I sure do! I decorate outside and in. Today, I actually got up the energy to make some of my own indoor decorations. I make a "gumdrop" Christmas Tree made out of yes, real gumdrops and a foam cone(tree). Made a wreath out of cardboard, cut like a wreath and glued green tissue paper to it and even a bow. So yeah i sure do decorate.
It's sad that a lot don't decorate though.

A lot of people don't have time and can't afford it. I decorate my house but I cringe at the electric bill in January. Of course there are those who don't celebrate Christmas so they have no point in decorating.

I live in a small town and there is a local women's group who gives an award every year for the best decorated house. We have tons of decorated houses in our town.
Call some local civic group and get them to sponsor this idea in your town. It's fun.

I wouldn't say it bothers me. However, I think people are not so concerned with christmas itself anymore. There are so many things in this world that the media has made us feel more interested in such as video game systems & britney's va-J-J. If more people would see christmas how it used to be seen & valued, I think things would change for the better.
