To have a good time, or enjoyable event, you just sometimes have to put problems and differences away.

Recognizing or talking about problems isn't going to create a festive atmosphere and joyful event. Which everyone needs once in a while.

dont get me started. I cant stand the holidays, from nov 1st on. two months of pure disgust with all of it. the hypocrasy, as you elude to with families, the commercialism, the greed, the debt, the amount of lights and blow up outdoor decorations, and on and on. it is nuts and im not that old to be saying " i remember when..." but i do.
When you are a kid, it is a magical time. It is just toys, relatives, dinner, parties, fun. As an adult it sucks. Obligatory parties at work or with friends, shopping for crap because you think you have to buy somebody something, and of course getting together with family who is probably dysfunctional in some way.
I wish there was a way to get some true meaning back into the holidays so as adults we can enjoy the one and a half days off of work.

it's the time of the year when families come together (or at least pretend they are). Obviously everyone expects them to be nice to each other when the time alls for them to do so. Basically, it's all just for show.
