Mind you, I was a certified lifeguard with 3 beach/ocean saves. Never considered myself a hero. It was my job.

They are people who don't go to work every day feeling like heroes, or get up for work because they think they are one - but at the same time these are people who have the mentality of heroes. They go the extra mile, they work to get to that extra mile, and each occupation carries an awareness that they may be called on to put their own lives at risk, and do so anyway. The only profession that may not fit that is the average doctor. But plenty of doctors spend a few years in third world countries or going into harm's way in war zones. Anyway, they are all heroes in my eyes. More power to them.

And yes, you are a hero to at least three people, and each one of their families I suspect. Nice job :).

I would have to say that most days they are just doing the job they signed up for. Some days they go above and beyond what any other person would do and so yes sometimes they are heroes. My husband was a mechanic in the Army for 8 years then he got sent to war and was in the fight right along with everyone else and so to me he is a hero just because I know what he saw and I know what he did and I know that the man the left for Iraq is not the man that came home to me. The man that left was hard and abbrasive and didn't really appreciate what he had. The man that came home was so touched and changed by what he saw and did that he knows now that there is nothing better in life the love of his family and spending time with us. That is what makes him a hero to me.

I would say hero's. They choose their professions, knowing what they have to give up. they put their lives on the line, especially the firemen, police officers and military. My husband is in Iraq right now, I think he's a hero for giving up his family, his children's first Christmas (twin boys) I'm even pregnant and gonna have another baby, all while he's protecting other peoples rights. That makes him a hero in my eyes.

A true hero doesn't consider themselves a hero. A real hero is someone doing their job despite the personal risk. So the answer is yes they are heros and yes they are doing their jobs. They are not mutually exclusive.

They are just people doing the job they are paid, with tax dollars, to do.Just like the man that dumps your trash into the back of a trash truck for you every week.

The true hero is the one that acts out of no thought to his safety, that he is not paid to do so.

Don't get me wrong. I think firemen & EMT's are just great. Doctors can be. Military personel have my greatest respect. But police...give me a break, alot of them just plain suck. Think they are little tin gods and alot of them are. They are so over kill on the poor lone slob that they happen upon when he is alone. Kick and beat the living fire out of him. Enough to make your sick to your stomach.

What pool did you work at?

In regards to Military personnel, I have to say Yes. Granted I'm biased, being prior service myself (as a CT in the Navy). Soldiers and sailours endeavour to take responsibility for the safety of the body politic of which they are a member, defending its existance against encroachment with their very life. It is a commitment they awake to every day, and a duty they accept without question or reservation.

Few others can boast similarly.

I think they are just doing a difficult job UNTIL they face a situation where the potential impact on them is so profound that most or many of their colleagues would back off and they the hero does not

it depends on the persons motive. there is nothing heroic about doing a good deed in return for a reward.
it may shock you, but there are those who do good simply because they are good. they are heroes whether or not they are compensated.

Heroes? never - they just work for their paycheck.

I have particular hatred of paramedics. they act like tough guys, they think they're policemen. they intimidate people into admission to hospitals, etc. EMT's and paramedics deserve a punch in the balls to cut them down to size.

when i was in a rehab place, one day an old Russian lady was harassed by 2 paramedics who tried to force her into transfer to a hospital . her son, a big tough guy, stood up to the pig-animals and told the 2 EMT's : " you keep your hands off my mom - or I'll bust your faces. " the paramedics backed off. I was so proud of him . No one has the right to force anyone off to a hospital against their will.

I hate paramedics. they are lowlife thugs. Trash of the earth.
