I am nearly 5 months pregnant and on 75mg daily of Effexor XR and have been for about 2 years, my doctor is a bit of a twit IMHO but after years of trial and error I have found Effexor works for me. I have decided to stay on this dosage while pregnant and have found some information that is positive on pregnancy and breastfeeding, my doc says I should not nurse but I really want to and feel the benefits outway the risks, BUT I am always scouring for new info, does anyone have further info on breastfeeding on Effexor XR?

Congratulations !
I take (took) much higher dose of Effexor XR.Like you, all other med didn't work & this is our saving grace. I to was worried. Both my OBGYN & Psychiatrist kept in touch , I also let the Pediatrician know.
I nursed my son for 2 1/2 years he is now 7 he has always been a happy healthy child he is in the top of his class at school & is quick to remember things & has a great memory.
(*My Psychiatrist had very little info in 1999 from the drug company about Effexor during pregency & in the breast milk & for 5 years followed mine & my sons out come for the manufactures of the drug*)

Effexor And Breastfeeding

This is a tough decision. I am also on effexor xr 75mg, but i am not pregnant or breastfeeding, and i didn't take this during them either. I however have two beautiful kids and remember how it felt to worry about everything and anything during the pregnancies and breastfeeding after wards. As someone who knows what it feels like when you are not on these antidepressants, it is not a fun thought. Since you are on 75 mg, maybe you could try reducing your dosage to 37.5? I did read that some babies did have withdrawl symptoms, if you have them they sure are to have them as well. My thoughts are maybe you could wean onto the 37.5, then get totally off of them a few weeks or a month before delivery. Decide how you feel then. if you are having your depression symptoms back where they are to much to bare, then try back on to the lowest dose. Its really 50/50 on this topic, but as a mom of 2 i would definitely think of what my baby would be going through first. I remember my symptoms all to well of depression, they happened after my 1st born, but i lived with them to make sure that my babies got a healthy start in life. I wish you the best of luck.

Giving birth to a new life is indeed a blessing which almost every woman would wish to have. How to get pregnant naturally https://tr.im/VIzfQ
Enjoying the feeling of motherhood and raising a family would surely be a couple’s dream. Some get it naturally, while for some others things don’t seem to work as they desire. These reasons which stop a women from conceiving can be due to either physical reasons or truly physiological.

Call this number I know it may be long distance, and it may take up to 10 minutes to get through, but it is worth it. They are up on all the current info:

(416) 813-6780

Uncontrolled depression is, of course, very bad for both baby and mother. Breastfeeding can also be somewhat protective against depression. Not to mention that even in the US there is an increase in mortality among formula fed infants, and there is the cost. However you, of course must review the available information and make a decision, and I know that that can be hard to do. Talk to your pharmacist, many are up on current literature. I hope you can find an answer.

Here is some other information as well:

"Effexor is a popular drug for treating depression in Australia. It is less popular here in the USA due to reported side effects. Effexor can also be used in breastfeeding mothers if it is efficacious. It may be effective against hyperactivity. It is an SSRI and NRI."
http://kellymom.com/health/meds/antidepressants-hale10-02.html#Effexor

"AIMS: To characterize milk/plasma (M/P) ratio and infant dose, for venlafaxine (V) and its O-desmethyl metabolite (ODV), in breastfeeding women taking venlafaxine for the treatment of depression, and to determine the plasma concentration and effects of these drugs in their infants
[...]
The concentrations of V and ODV in breast milk were 2.5 and 2.7 times those in maternal plasma. The mean total drug exposure (as venlafaxine equivalents) of the breastfed infants was 6.4% (5.5-7.3%), which is below the 10% notional level of concern. There were no adverse effects in any of the infants. The data support the use of V in breastfeeding."

You shouldn't even be thinking about putting that into your chilld's body and your Doctor is a freakin' quack! You shouldn't be on it, either!
