Hi there...California and Hawaii ban ownership of ferrets, however some local communities within each state will also not allow ferrets to be kept as pets and the others that do may require a permit so you would need to check with your local animal shelters to be certain. Arizona and Nevada should be fine. Each pet store such as PetSmart and Petco decide independently whether or not they will sell ferrets so you would need to ring each to see who carries them.

Here's a chart of where ferrets are illegal or legal and if a permit is required: http://home.netcom.com/~redshoes/ffztable.html

I think the only places they're illegal is CA, Hawaii, and NYC. If you live in a big city, check before you buy. But if you can find them around, they are probably fine.

You may not be allowed to have an intact (not spayed/neutered) ferret... it's illegal in my state, but most ferrets in a pet store are sold already fixed (which is great.)

Expect to pay about $120 to $150. check with the smaller pet stores first, I don't think Petsmart would have them. Look for one that's alert, playful and not too nippy.

And have FUN! They are great animals!

I know ferrets are illegal in California, but I'm not too sure about the 2 states you mentioned. I'm sure if you look up ferrets on your computer, it will tell you. I had ferrets in Pennsylvania for years. Love the little critters!! Some states classify them as wild animals and you will get fined if you have one. I live in Hawaii and never saw them here, either, so they're probably illegal.
