Well i live in Johannesburg in South Africa. What a lovely place. But be warned, there are places that are not safe. Dont go to Soweto,. ever, or Alexandra, Vosloosrus, yeoville, hilbrow etc. A nice place to stay in, in Johannesburg, would be Sandton, Rivonia, Bedfordview, Rosebank. If you go to Durban (by the sea) stay in Umshlanga or Umdloti. Cape Town i dont know.
Do's:

Go to the kruger national park game reserve.(JHB)
Go to goldreef city theme park(JHB)
You must go to the Ushaka Marine world in Durban.
Just do lots of site seeing, especially in the bush and wilderness. But never on your own, go with a tour.

Dont's

dont walk around with lots of money or your passport. if it gets stolen, you might find two months later that you are married to a Nigerian or Zimbabwian.
Dont go alone, take a friend with you to places.
Dont go to dodggy places, especially at night.

Just be alert when you come and you;ll be okay.

Hope to see you soon in our Sunny South Africa.

its as safe as any other country. everywhere around the world there's crime now. you just have to take necessary precautions that you would take in ur own country.
south africa is a great place. if u're going for the first time, be accompanied by someone who knows the place so that you can maximise ur stay. Durban is a great place, as well as cape town.

South Africa is a dangerous, dangerous place.
Do not believe these fools that tell you that 'crime happens everywhere', and that you have to take the same precautions in places like New York. That's bullsh*t. Bullsh*t that might get you hurt.
I've lived in New York for sixteen years. It's not remotely comparable.

As with any country, South Africa does have a crime problem. There are many safe places to visit, and there are many you wouldn't want to venture into (even during the day).

Do ask locals about the places you plan to visit once you are here. Ask your travel agency about places to visit and how to visit them safely.

I would recommend that you nver visit any place unless under guidence of a local who knows where you are going. Do not just trust 1 local, ask at least 3 locals (who do not know each other).

Unfortunately tourists are seen as soft targets and are sometimes conned into going to "a Party in Soweto" and get themselves into trouble.
