("adam r" has the right idea above, however, only files smaller than 1 mb, are transfered across the server....)
"How can I find out the IP address of my friend's computer?"
Easy, use the "send file" feature. Before you send them a file, you need to be set up though.
Start
Run
type "cmd"
type "netstat -a"
This will show you a long column of all current connections to your computer. The TCP connections will be listed first, followed by the UDP connects.
Take a moment and familiarize yourself with whats currently connected.
Dont worry about the connections where the Local Address is the same as the Foreign Address, these are whats known as "loopback" connections (your computer connecting back to itself for various applications)
What were interested in is the foreign addresses that look like this;
va-in-f104.google.com
This shows connection to google, obviously. However in IM transfers, you will receive the actual 32-bit numeric address written as four numbers separated by periods.
Now scroll down to the bottom of the connection list, where you have another prompt waiting with the blinking cursor, and press the up arrow, this will reload the last command. In our case "netstat -a"
Now don't press enter yet, leave it just like that for a moment.
So far, so good? : )
OK, what we want to do now is size each window (the command window, and Yahoo messenger window) so that we are able to see them both side by side on the screen.
Now contact your friend and tell them you have a really great flash file, or video (whatever, the larger the file, the longer the connection will remain open. So something in the neighborhood of 10-20 mb's should leave you plenty of time to capture the IP ), and offer to send it to them. When they agree to accept it, (use your imagination here) Click send, and Immediately (you have to be quick if its a small file)
Click on the title bar of the command window, and hit enter.
You will capture your friends IP address ,as Yahoo Messenger will establish a direct connection to their computer to transfer the file. You will see a new list of Foreign connections in the command window , one of these will be your friends IP address. If you are not sure which one it is, try looking them up at an online whois service http://www.dnstools.com/ and the one that is owned by their ISP (time-warner, verizon, whatever) will be theirs!
Please note, if they are on dial-up, this is only a temporary IP address (dynamic) and will change next time they sign on.
This technique is known as "Direct Connect" and is implemented by Yahoo in order to save bandwidth on their servers.
You can also initiate a DCC (direct connect) to their computer by using an avatar/ personal photo larger than 1 mb. And YM will directly connect to transfer the avatar/ photo without them ever having to agree to receive a file ( again all in the interest of saving bandwidth) This connection will be really fast, (just long enough to pass the photo across) When you first initiate an IM session with the other person.
After the data is received by the other party, the photo/avatar will be cached on their machine and the connection will be closed. So you have to have the cmd window up and ready to capture the IP, immediately upon IM'ing them / receiving an IM from that person.
Or instead of using "cmd, netstat -a" you can use a packet-sniffing tool like ethereal, or wireshark, but this takes a little more knowledge.
PS, if you are planning on using this, I would copy and paste this post to a text file NOW, posts like this have a way of "disappearing" in a hurry ; )
Good Luck!

Get a No Cost Background Check Scan at https://bitly.im/aOlsD
Its a sensible way to start. The site allows you to do a no cost scan simply to find out if any sort of data is in existence. A smaller analysis is done without cost. To get a detailed report its a modest payment.
You may not realize how many good reasons there are to try and find out more about the people around you. After all, whether you're talking about new friends, employees, doctors, caretakers for elderly family members, or even significant others, you, as a citizen, have a right to know whether the people you surround yourself with are who they say they are. This goes double in any situation that involves your children, which not only includes teachers and babysitters, but also scout masters, little league coaches and others. Bottom line, if you want to find out more about someone, you should perform a background check.

There's no easy way to do this with most chat clients because you're almost never directly conversing with your friend(s); instead, everything relays through the provider's servers before reaching your friend. In other words, in order to obtain this information, you'll have to be sneaky.
You used to be able to send a file directly to your friend in AIM and YIM, which would allow you to run a command like netstat to view the IP you're sending the file to, but I believe it all goes through the provider's servers anymore. If you want to try, open the command terminal and type "netstat" while sending the file and look at the port numbers and connecting ip address.
Otherwise, if they're gullibile enough, you could always try getting them to visit a page that has a built-in IP identifier and then have them get that information to you in some way.

you really think someone in their right mind will tell you?!?
HA HA HA
Why dont you just chat to one screen ID about the other screen ID's (like the other one they use) and somehow find out if it is the same person.
No reason to know the IP address!!!!

Not possible unless you have access to the records of their service provider. IP addresses are not displayed as part of e-mail or chat.

There is no reason to know the IP address. If you know, you may hack his / her computer or otherwise.
Or, if you are friendly with him, you can just ask and tell him why you must his / her IP.

Ask them. They can find it by "Start", "Run" then type CMD and push enter.
Type (no quotes) "IPCONFIG" and push enter. Your IP address will be displayed. Type "EXIT" to close the window.
