Their credit card was maxed out so they put half on their debit card, about 200 dollars total, then in the parking lot the man asked me for 10 or 12 dollars for gas to get home, does anyone have an opinion about this, should people spend their last penny on christmas

people get stupid with money these days, with access to many different credit cards, they dont think about how they are going to pay it back, just that they want something right now and must have it, who cares how they are going to pay it back, they will figure it out. i have a friend like this and it is very sad. this is why i have only one credit card, and it is only used for emergencies, or if i buy something i already have the money in my bank to pay it off (to get points on the credit card). honestly, if i saw what you saw and they asked me for money, i would have told them to go return something to get gas money, im sure theres something in their cart that they dont really need.

Asking someone for gas money in the parking lot was definitely over the top, but spending their last dollar might not have been intentional. Sometimes people go into a store with a budget and don't seem to realize that they are choosing beyond their means and are to embarrassed to put things back when their total is rung up at the register. I think Christmas puts us all into a spending frenzy which is truly unnecessary.

I think you can be forgiven easily for going overboard for Christmas, but if this your usual habit when it comes to spending then you need to back off on the Wal-Mart trips and eBay purchases. Family comes first, and that doesn't mean just having a joyful Christmas for the kids, it also means taking precautions along the way to ensure that simple things such as groceries, gas, utilites and emergencies are in your budget range.

I would not want anyone to to go into debt to buy me a gift. I would MUCH prefer that they make something from materials they have on hand. It could be as simple as a home made card or a loaf of bread or a jar of homemade jam. I think the retailers in this country would drop dead from heart attacks if everyone suddenly put more value on hand made and homemade gifts. It is the giving of something from yourself that is special to me, not a gift card or CD from wal-mart.

Hope you did not give them any money. People like that have lost all reason and don't know what Christmas is all about. To max out ones credit cards like that is totally stupid, considering the high interest rates most credit cards have, they will be paying for this years presents for years to come. These are people who get themselves into financial trouble and dig themselves a hole that will swallow their financial future.

No definitely not. That just shows how commerical Christmas has become. Christmas means so many things besides giving gifts. It certainly to me means giving however you can give to those you are closest to in so many ways besides gifts. The true meaning of Christmas to me, has been lost in the commercialization of Christmas. Spending time with your family and friends, As far back as 1850 in her book "The First Christmas in New England", Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote a character who complained that the true meaning of Christmas was being lost in a shopping spree.

The true meaning of Christmas is different for everyone. For some it means spending the Christmas season with family and friends, for others who are Christians it means remembering the birth of Christ, for others it means reliving old traditions, or giving service to those in need. When i was student teaching I gave a an assignment to my students and I asked them the question: What is the true meaning of Christmas to you? It was so nice to see that all of the children in my class answered the question by referring to the fact that Christmas was a time to spend with their family and friends, giving to them and giving to others (especially others who did not have as much as this child had), rather than saying it was a time to get things from Santa or from family.

I quit celebrating years ago when I realized it was a commercial holiday. Working in retail helped me realize that after working one Christmas season. People use it as an excuse to spend a lot of money and make themselves look good to their friends and family. I've had people ask me to buy them lunch because they spent all their money on gifts. If people want to spend all their money on gifts they have to deal with it. They can go return a gift or two and use that to buy gas.

I think its a shame the way people spend for christmas, and then have to work their buts off all year to try to pay it off. Sure its nice to have a good Christmas, but use reason. No they should not spend all their money on Christmas because you never know when an emergency might happen and them need money.

no, they shouldn't. that is very irresponsible. There are many gifts you can give people that don't cost anything. It sets a bad example for the kids that it is OK to spend money on things you can't afford. Sure, it's sad that people can't afford to buy all the gifts they would like to, but that's life. Living within your means is a virtue. I hope those folks meet with greater prosperity some day soon, but until that day, they need to sacrifice. It will make them stronger in the long run.

Nope!

Whether you decide to help such people and loan them gas $ or whatever, they will have to face their responsibilities. If I was in your shoes, I would say "Sorry brother, I have no cash on me at this minute too...Merry Christmas!"
