It is the Messenger SERVICE, not Windows Messenger that needs to be disabled in order to stop pop-ups that have "Messenger Service" in the title bar.

Sounds like you may have an older version of Windows (pre XP SP2). These type of popups often exploit the Messenger Service in your Windows OS, which after XP SP2 is disabled by default.
A popup blocker "thingy" will be of no help in this case.

You have 2 choices to end the problem.

1. You can disable and stop Messenger Service by running services msc. on your computer.

2. You can use the free utility called Shoot The Messenger to automatically disable this unnecessary service.

Please note that Messenger Service is not the same as any Instant Messenger program that you may have on your computer. Disabling it will not cause you to lose any IM functionality that you may have.

Pop-ups can still come from 2 other sources.

1. Some are generated by websites that you visit. Basically just a form of very annoying advertising. These are the type that popup blockers such as Yahoo's toolbar or Windows XP Blocker are most effective againest.

2. They are generated by malware software which is installed on your own computer usually without your knowledge or consent. Popup blockers do not work to stop this kind.
Removing from your computer all: spyware, adware, trojan horses, and virus' will usually take care of these type.

Here's some to get you started:

1. Scan for virus and remove (free online scan) with BitDefender

2. Scan for trojans and remove (free online scan) with Ewido

3. Scan for ad/spyware and remove (free download) with Spybot Search & Destroy

Closing windows messenger will not stop pop ups. You need a pop up blocker.

Download the Yahoo or Google toolbar and they come with one.

there are two windows messengers. in adminisative tools, then services, you can disable there. the other messenger is easyer to disable, if you need to use the latest msn one.
