Most PS1 games will play in the PS2 just by putting them in and turning it on. The region on the game and system have to be the same however. Also not all games are compatible so you might be out of luck on a few of them.

You put the disk in and turn the playstation 2 on. It will start up with the Playstation 2 intro then when the game loads it will go to the Playstation 1 screen and boot the game as normal.

To save you will need a playstation 1 memory card. You can't save Playstation 1 games on your Playstation 2 memory card.

Almost all the games work except ones that require seperate hardware that can't be used on the Playstation 2. I can't think of any right now but I know their are some.

Just put the disks into your console and off you go. As stated in another answer you need a PS1 memory card to save your games.
