I generally dislike to disagree with other people, but in the interest of clarity, I must. The only things placed in coffins in ancient Egypt were smaller coffins, burial masks, mummies and the protective amulets which were wrapped up in the linen bandages around the mummies. The treasures and offerings previously mentioned were placed in the tombs, around the coffins.
The coffins were usually constructed from wood, inlaid with gold and precious gems and were skillfully crafted and decorated to resemble the likeness of the person for whom they were made. The number of coffins, fitting one inside another and placed inside a sarcophagus; and the number of sarcophagus, also fitting one inside another, depended on the wealth of the deceased. A Pharaoh for example would have several of each, while a farmer might have only one coffin, or be laid to rest in the linen bandages he was wrapped in after the embaling process.
As wood was a scarce commondity in ancient Egypt, it was imported from the Levant and was quite often, cedar wood.

The Ancient egyptians believed in life after death so they buried their dead with extreme care. In the coffins of the rich and powerful, they placed gold, treasures, food, and any other things the people thought the dead would need to enjoy their afterlife.

the richer the person, the more care and items they could afford to have buried with them. these items would be needed to provide comfort in the after life as the Egyptians believed they would live the same lifestyle in the afterlife. so they would need servants, water, wine, food and all the comforts they had while here.
