I recently saw someone shoplifting at a store i was as stupid as this sounds wondering do those security tags ring when you walk out or are they just to ruin the merchadise the shoplifter takes... This one didn't ring but I wasn't sure if they all don't ring or not for future reference incase this situation happens again

You want to know "so you won't worry about the next shoplifter ruining their clothes?" Bizarre.

They are supposed to set off the alarm system in the store, but sometimes either the tag or the alarm is set improperly. There are also ways you can destroy the tag from activating the alarm and this is a possibility of what happened. In the future you may want to pretend you're asking for help and notify someone in the store. Or if you are a gutsy person you can just yell shoplifter really loud and point in the person's direction and get everyone's attention. You have to be very careful with the second option....in today's society the person who is doing wrong is the one who feels like they're being done wrong. And for the guy who said so what...it is a big deal. A corporation or business can only write off so many losses, after awhile they're going to have to raise prices or take some drastic measures that affect the consumer, just so they can make up for the stolen merchandise.

Ok,, what they are is a radio reflector, just a cheap antenna that tuned to a multiple of the door scanner freq. Those small white flat things with glue paste on one side you find in all kinds of stuff you buy is what they are. The check out register has pads that detune them so it throws the freq off just enough most of the time so they don't set off the detectors on the way out, but sometimes it doesn't work all the way, that's why you see the middle aged Mom setting off the alarms sometimes. You can't detune them, but they are cheap and plentifull so, If it's a high value item, it's gonna be in there some where, outside the sealed packaging. Find and remove.

You could tell the sales girl or cashier what you saw (and they may or maynot thank you for this). Or you can choose to keep quiet! I heard of tags that do not ring but once you get them removed, the tags will spray and stain your stuff permanently and the thief won't be able to use what's stolen...for good.

I don't think they all work if any of them do just today when i got home from work my wife had went and purchased some clothing for our granddaughter and she also works where she got the merchandise but when we looked at it she just said she her co-worker didn't take the security tag off so it is still on the clothing now she probally will take it back to work with her and remove it herself with her reciept.

Some security tags beep when you try to leave the store others can only be removed with a special tool they have at the store.
