Hatred of someone we know nothing about comes from a lack of self-esteem, from a closed mind, or from a closed heart. Jealosy of another person comes to mind, (which falls under the self-esteem category.) Hatred is the opposite of love so if we do not love ourselves we can not love others. For a person to hate another there must be something within themself that they hate. What the hater should realize is they are worthy of love and should allow themself to believe it and they can learn how to love themself. Meditation is a route to learning this practice (and it does take practice.) First priority is healing onesself (hatred is a sickness with negative physiological consequences,) and will teaches one to see they are worthy of love so they can open their heart to accepting it. When this happens one can give love to others for there will no longer be hatred in their heart. All people are worthy of love and we are all connected - we are one-life. We can create peace and overcome hatred for all of humanity through the giving of unconditional love.

P.S. Love people, not things!

Your own sinful nature that you were born with. Perhaps this Scripture in the Bible answers you best: Titus 3:3-5, which says, "Once we, too, were foolish and disobedient. We were misled by others and became slaves to many wicked desires and evil pleasures. Our lives were full of evil and envy. We hated others, and they hated us. But then God our Savior showed us His kindness and love. He saved us, not because of the good things we did, but because of His mercy. He washed away our sins and gave us a new life through the Holy Spirit..." Only through Christ's sacrifice on the cross for us, forgiveness of our sins, and invitation into our hearts, can we learn to truly love, as Christ loves us!

The source of hatred mostly lies in a pool of ignorance. For the rest of us, it is our job to pull them out or toss them a rope and let them find their way.

The source is in the heart.... But know for certain, it was not always present, it grew from something it once learned.... Once learned, it stayed...... Once it becomes a part of the heart, it is very hard to get rid of...... It is the spirit that makes dreams difficult to live through.........

I think all the answers above are good and true - i would like to add that sin comes into play, also "self" - when we place our self at the top of things then we take a "my way or the highway" kind of approach.

Prejudging them. Even we don't know them, we hate them because they're something that is related to problems even they are not the source of your problems.

Ignorance and fear. Stupidity often plays a major role here as well.

Because of what we love, and the presumption that they are a real threat to that which we love!
