G'day,

It takes an overseas student (or ex) to answer this question ;)

Ok... where should I start...

For clothing, this is some of the choices:
1. DFO on Spencer Street (check www.dfo.com.au for other locations)
2. Bridge Road, Richmond
3. Smith Street, Collingwood
4. Brand Smart, Nunawading (http://www.brandsmart.com.au/cpa/htm/htm...
5. Altona market in Altona (Sunday morning)
6. Salvation Army/St Vincent De Paul shops (sometimes they have 2nd hand furniture as well)

For Computing:
1. Computer Swap Meet (http://www.comtrader.com.au/swap/dates.php3)
2. Read The Age newspaper on Thursdays (Green Guide)

For Electrical:
1. Big W / KMart / Target / JB HiFi / Clive Peeters

Furniture:
1. IKEA
2. Most furniture and bedding stores. Check www.yellowpages.com.au
3. There are some furniture shops along Chapel Street, South Yarra as well that sells 2nd hand stuff, but can't guarantee it is cheap.

The trick about shopping in Australia is that you cannot convert every single price that you see into your currency. If you do, you will never even eat or buy anything in Australia. I had the same problem when I arrived in Melbourne for the first time in my life as an overseas student.
Australia has a higher standard of living compare with most countries. Therefore you just have to compare prices of the stuff that you found in Australia. It takes time to build that confidence but I am sure that you will able to find stuff that you need with the best price available.

I am attaching a link from a university that has some good info about shopping in Melbourne.

Welcome to Melbourne and good luck with your study :)

Go out by train to Footscray ! There you will find a lot of secondhand household and electrical goods shops and good cheap clothes. The majority of the shops and markets are Vietnamese and so you also find friendly politeness and a chance to haggle. (if you know how).A great spot to buy a mobile phone / PC accessories.
Don't be put off by nonsense remarks from Aussies about these people, they are very decent and straight with their customers, just a different culture that's all. Also, the Victoria Market in North melbourne is very good and in the summer months has a lot of charm and atmosphere. I think if I remember around this time of year there maybe the night markets at Victoria Markets with all the world cultures food and crafts stalls? Also for clothing try Bridge Road, Richmond shopping area (No.48 tram from Flinders Street.) only a few tram stops from City. Give my regards to Melbourne ! Have fun. It's great.

K-Mart, Target and Big W are always fairly cheap but they aren't second hand.
Two places to go for second hand things are: Cash Converters or Savers.
Some places to buy cheap food are: Bi-Lo, Safeway (Woolworths), Coles, IGA or FoodWorks. I would 100% say Bi-Lo is the cheapest for food/drinks etc.
Also, if you are living anywhere near Coburg, you can go to the Coburg Drive-Ins on a Sunday and they have a Trash & Treasure market there. They are always very cheap but you wouldn't be able to buy food/drinks there.

Also if you have a computer, go to www.tradingpost.com.au for second hand items. Or try www.ebay.com.au - also a very popular website for second hand items. Make sure to go and check out any items before purchase as I have seen many fake items on www.ebay.com.au.
