Yes, you can but the chances are highly unlikely if you have a normal menstrual cycle (28 days, ovulating 14 days from the first day you start bleeding with a 3-7 day bleeding period).
The problem is that cycles can and do vary each month, so it is possible to get pregnant if you ovulated earlier than normal. Sperm can live in the vagina for up to a week. Logically, if your periods are short and you have sex right before you start bleeding, then you could conceive IF you ovulated earlier than the average 14 days. It's happened to a lot of women.
Unlike what some of the other responses say, you CANNOT get pregnant at anytime during your cycle, ONLY when you are ovulating. If you've had sex up to a week prior to the day you ovulate, then you can get pregnant. You can't get pregnant after you've ovulated because the egg is not viable any more. Sometimes women double ovulate, or ovulate late. The key is knowing WHEN you are ovulating (see below).
Personally, I track my period on a free website and it predicts what days I'm going to ovulate based on past information. It's about 90% right most of the time, but my periods are pretty regular (I occasionally have an off-month, but no one's cycles are 100% perfect). In addition, I've also learned to listen to my body and have learned to tell when I'm ovulating. Every month, the female body prepares itself for fertilization and there are a couple of obvious signs. Ways to check for impending ovulation include using an ovulation predictor (though they can be expensive), taking basal temperature in the morning, and monitoring cervical mucus production and position of the cervix. There are websites that can tell you more about that, if you're interested.
Checking can be tedious and takes some getting used to, but I see it as peace of mind and I also feel more in tune with my cycles. Also, if you are trying to get pregnant, then you know when it's time to start getting busy! :-D
Of course, it's always best to practice safe sex especially if you're new at checking ovulation, you don't want to bother, or you have irregular cycles. Just remember that NO method of birth control is 100% effective at preventing pregnancy except for abstinence.

i'm preg with 3rd baby, had 2 miscarriages and I got preg. with all on the last day of my period. it's very likely that it could happen. even if you have a normal 28 day cycle and 3-5 day period, which i do, i just happen to ovulate at the end of my period instead of the usual 14 days.

The women stating yes you can, I beg to differ........I think what they mean is, if your cycle is irregular you may ovulate , and YES you can.........I ovulated 11 days after my period stopped..... Most women say ( that track their ovulation ) as a rule its usually 14-16 days after your period.......(ovulation).......You only have 24 hrs to hit it.......Most likely NO.........If I had to say yes or no...~ Its no...... VERY FEW women ovulate the day after.......% wise is 6%........

Yes you can if you happen to ovulate at that time. If you ovulate at irregular times than it is very hard to predict when you can have sex without becoming pregnant.

If you have sex, you can get pregnant. You can also get sexually transmitted diseases. These can both occur regardless of whether or not protection is used. It's quite simple, don't have sex if you're not prepared to face all the consequences that being sexually active brings..
