How about Jack for John and Sasha for Alexander?

There are many historical reasons why nicknames and diminutives are the way they are. Some were borrowed from other languages, and some were originated hundreds or thousands of years ago, and the reasons for the actual spelling and pronunciation are lost in the sea of time.

Some of the derivation is known. Jack is derived from Jackin (earlier Jankin), a medieval pet form of John, which came from the biblical Hebrew name meaning"YAHWEH is gracious" through greek and Latin to Johannes, and then to English.

Jonathon comes from the Hebrew name (again through Greek and Latin), meaning "YAHWEH has given". In the Old Testament Jonathan was the eldest son of Saul and a friend of David. He was killed in battle with the Philistines.

For the nickname for Jonathon, Jon or John is acceptable; the spelling preference is an individual choice.

Or like Richard and Dick, Robert and Bob. hehe I've often wondered that myself.

Perhaps because the English are very phonetic people?
