I have recently heard that the homeless problem in America started when Reagan cut the budget for state mental hospitals and many people who were really not able to care for themselves became homeless all at once in the 1980s. Couple that with reduced programs for single mothers with children and the growing unemployment we have and the escalating interest rates for credit cards and you have a recipe for disaster.

I think that it is feasible for us to fix this problem, but I think that we would have to seriously rethink our economic system. There's a great book by Robert Heinlein called For Us the Living and it talks of the ultimate human society and what we might need to do to get there. It's fascinating - here's a link: http://www.amazon.com/Us-Living-Comedy-Customs/dp/0743491548/sr=8-1/qid=1166416425/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/104-9390199-0013517?ie=UTF8&s=books

Peace!

Some people become homeless through no fault of their own, some become homeless because they did handle their business like they should have. Heck, there are people with PhDs that are homeless right now...

most no one buys a home with cash. we all owe the bank our house payment. many many many many Amarican jobs have been moved overseas in the last few years.......hundreds of thousands of lost jobs often means lost homes. we are really all mostly only 90 days from homeless in the working class. also there is the mental health issue in our country. this one is huge. also, sadly enough, often our precious and brave Veteren's are left unable to hold a job that supports them.... and worst of all we as a nation don't make sure they have basic needs. there are many reasons people are homeless....... we are all just people some with many more hardships to bear than others. as a nation it is up to us to care for the homeless, find resolution.

I think most homeless people have come from highly disfunctional families and just are not able to cope. Many others have mental diseases, they are given drugs which make it possible for them to sort of function, but not really. And I have even known homeless people who are hiding, from the IRS, FBI, etc.

there is not enough room here to get too specific.i live in a city with many homeless people (paterson,n.j.),i came from newark n.j.,also full of homeless.there are many reasons.the main one is growing up poor,or with only one parent trying to raise the children.you may have to quit school to go to work to help bring money to the house.
without education you don't get a good job.but without the job you have no home,so it becomes a cycle.also many who are on drugs or alcohol end up in the street,as do people who are mentally ill.
people in inner cities do not have the same opportunities as those in the suburbs.there are too many people in the city and not enough money to help everyone.also the court throws you out if you can't pay your rent, instead of helping the families(i lost my house, the court evicted us and gave us 2 pages of people and places to call for help.i went to every single one.not one helped us.they were" out of money")if you don't have a place to live that day, they take your children away.all this trouble(like going to court and places looking for help) keeps you from going to work(if you can find any),which means no money, which means no home.back to the inner city cycle.

The largest cause of homelessness is crushing medical costs. Those who cannot afford insurance are raped and pillaged by the medical/pharmaceutical industry, that punishes them for the crime of being poor, or even middle-class. The entire society is set up to funnel money to the top, it is legalized crime.
