Saves tax dollars...

but actually you could do some research yourself and come up with good stuff...

in a debate....you are going to need references for your information and Yahoo Answers isn't a good one.

Good luck on this project. Your side is definitely the tougher one. On the facts, abolitionists win. It is better for you if you go into this debate knowing the facts.

One of the replies to your question is wrong:
The overall cost for imprisoning a criminal for life is far more expensive than simply executing them after "X" amount of years.

It is far more expensive to have a death penalty system than one where the worst punishment is life without parole. Some of the reasons:
1.A prosecutor who thinks a case may warrant the death penalty has to do a lot more pre trial investigation.

2. A death penalty trial is actually 2 separate trials- the guilt phase, and the sentencing phase.

3. The cost of housing a prisoner on a separate death row is far more than for incarceration in the general prison population.

4. Appeals.

Just one example: In New York State over a period of 10 years, exactly 7 men were sentenced to death at a cost of way over $200,000,000. The cost of incarcerating a prisoner in New York State, not on death row, averages only $35,000 per year and trial costs in non death penalty cases (which often end in guilty pleas) are trivial compared to death penalty trials.

Other things to keep in mind- more and more states have life without parole on the books. It means what it says.
Lifers are among the least violent prisoners.
Over 120 people have been released from death rows with evidence of their innocence. (Of interest is the fact that few of these exonerations were based on DNA evidence, which is not often available.) Many of these people would have been executed if the process were speeded up.

The point about helping victims family members find peace is not accepted by all victims family members. Some oppose the death penalty in principal, on moral or religious grounds, and some support it in principal, but in fact, prefer life sentences because they allow the healing to begin and do not keep opening up terrible wounds, over and over again.

The currently used reason for supporting the death penalty is retribution. I can't explain just how this is different from revenge.

Hello,

When I was in college, I too had to do a paper on the death penalty. I was a social science major studying PSYCH, SOCIO and CJ.

I used the internet to do all my research and I got A's on all my papers.

Here are some links to help you start your thesis and paper.

BTW, I am PRO DEATH PENALTY.

Oh, forgot to answer your question.

3 Reasons for the Death Penalty:

1. Put the vitcims family(ies) at rest.
2. No more need to 3 square meals a day.
3. The murderer will never murder again.

Hope these help you.................... : - O

1. Those who are executed will NEVER kill again.
2. The overall cost for imprisoning a criminal for life is far more expensive than simply executing them after "X" amount of years.
3. If our judicial system was run more efficiently, the death penalty would serve perfectly as a deterrent.

How would you like to be a low paid prison guard, sent in to break up a fight between 2 or more inmates who are serving life?

They wouldn't want to hurt you would they? They wouldn't want to become a big shot in prison by killing you would they?

Look at the cots of keeping someone in prison for life (till what, 80 - 90 years old). Room and board, medical treatment, medication, etc the total is extremely high. If someone is a violent offender, wouldn't it be better for society to execute the person and put the money to better use on social programs?

No chance for repeat offense.

Gives victims peace of mind.

Lower chance others will commit the same crime.
