If admiring the strength and fighting prowess of animals gets you interested in science or even animal conservation it is a good thing. Black bears are the ones that climb trees, not brown bears. Lions can climb too, but not very well. Not as well as the leopard can, the best feline climber of all the great cats. Grizzlies are the largest up north and as you go southward grizzlies become smaller. A grizzly to the south might weigh only 300 to 500 pounds, and even match for the lion. Northern grizzlies can weigh 800 even 900 pounds or more. An animal like that should be able to beat just one lion no problem.

First, grizzly bears do not climb trees as adults, so the notion of a flying ambush is blown out the water. The lion more than likely would avoid a fight with a much larger bear unless they had a numerical advantage in that case the lions would jump all over the bear and wear it down and kill it or injure it. But in a 1 on 1 fight the bear would massacre the lion.
Add: Remember a grizzly bear weigh from 400-1500 pounds and the male lion weigh from 360-500, females 220-360 pounds.

The bear is bigger and tougher; even if the lion got the first move the bear would still be able to win the fight as the lion is not as coordinated with its paws and is more skilled with its mouth. The lion would thus tend to get close in, where the bear could use its arms to slash at the lion's neck and body. The bear's hand speed is faster than the lion's mouth speed, so the bear wins. Hooray bear!

Just to be contrary: I think the cat would win. Bears can be fast, but are not easy to tick off enough to fight. The lion could certainly climb after the bear and the bear isn't particularly graceful. Although...I really think the cat would have more sense than to get into the fight.
Cats are more calculating, if the bear won I suspect it would be his size that is in his favour, if the cat played dead he might survive that. (I'm not sure the two would ever tangle...) ; )
Edit: I missed the Grizzly part...the fight would not happen. ; )

Don't they teach anything in school? Griz can't climb trees, they are too heavy (1000-1500LBS). Why would the griz and lion fight? They only fight for food, territory, and to defend themselves. Otherwise they run, which is a good idea God gave them! Lions don't climb straight up, they only jump and then walk on the limbs.

I heard this question on the radio the other day. It was this: How many unarmed men would it take to go face to face with a grizzly bear and kill the bear. We are talking about a very hungry bear against as many men as you think it would take to kill this bear-unarmed. They talked about it for an hour. Everyone decided that it would be very difficult and that a lot of men would be killed in the process. Think about it.

It is not so easy to 'strike a fatal blow' on a grizzly bear. The lion would never win the fight, it is a neck biter and the neck of a bear is well protected and its forelimbs are agile.

I wish you people would stop making these animals fight. The grizzly would win, though. 800 pounds to about 450, 500. I do not know why I let you people drag me into this nonsense.
