Generally Al-Azhar University in Cairo, Egypt is considered the oldest. Founded in 975 AD, but the following also have claim to be the oldest:
- al Qarawiyyin Mosque, Fez, Morocco, 859 AD
- Takshashila University, India, 700 AD
- Nalanda University, Bihar, India, 5th Century
Oldest in the US is Harvard, Mass, 1636
