Nalanda University had been established by the 5th century BCE in India.
Al-Azhar University founded in 988 in Egypt.
In the U.S, Harvard, opened in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1636.

Generally Al-Azhar University in Cairo, Egypt is considered the oldest. Founded in 975 AD, but the following also have claim to be the oldest:
- al Qarawiyyin Mosque, Fez, Morocco, 859 AD
- Takshashila University, India, 700 AD
- Nalanda University, Bihar, India, 5th Century

Oldest in the US is Harvard, Mass, 1636

Oldest university maybe found in Athens, Greece where formal education first flourished as evidenced in Hebre writings to have existed 500 BC
