Because the mass of America has been drawn into the lies that our Government has spun. Sure, smoking marijuana isn't the best recreational activity, but it has never killed anyone. Too many people die every year from alcohol and tobacco, but no one has ever overdosed on marijuana. It is not possible. Nicotine is poisonous; if you have too much, you will die. Alcohol causes many deaths by just drinking way too much. All of these have been portrayed throughout our century as seedy ways of life, and yet the government picks our marijuana.

Sure, the effects of marijuana can cause poor judgment and bad reaction time, but so can alcohol, and an initial nicotine buzz. Smoking pot and driving should be treated the same as drinking and driving: illegal with harsh punishments. That doesn't mean that smoking pot itself should by banned, as alcohol has similar effects, and yet it is so widely used in our society. The sheer fact is that the government put its foot down: no marijuana. If the case is that marijuana can cause accidents if used stupidly, then alcohol should be banned too. If it is a case of marijuana being unhealthy due to the smoke, tobacco should be banned too. As these are the only 2 things wrong with it, and alcohol and tobacco are both legal (with restrictions), why is marijuana illegal?

Moral majority.

So if marijuana is illegal, why aren't alcohol and tobacco?

The inability of the government to give up a HUGE source of income by taxing these so heavily.

Marijuana was outlawed for two reasons. One was prejudice against mexican immigrants. The second was the fear that heroin addiction would lead to the use of marijuana -- exactly the opposite of the modern gateway.

The reason people have such crazy ideas about it is because the US Government has had an openly stated policy of lying about it since the 1930s. Harry Anslinger, the head of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics knew that the marijuana laws were unenforceable. Therefore, he figured that the only way to fight it was through ridiculous scare stories. The US Official Expert on marijuana testified in court, under oath that marijuana would make your incisors grow six inches long and drip with blood.

People thing Marijuana is worse than tobacco and alcohol because it is illegal. Alcohol is actually the worst. Weed has more harmful chemicals than cigarettes BUT since people usually smoke like a pack of cigs a day and smoke just a little amount of weed a day...I think cigarettes are more harmful. Plus being an alcoholic or addicted to cigarettes is much more strenuous than marijuana.

Well, I think it MAY be temporarily worse than tobacco because it alters your state of mind and lowers your reaction time. In short, I'm comfy with people smoking tobacco driving cars where I'm not comfy with people smoking marijuana driving cars.

I can't imagine a scenario in which alcohol isn't worse than marijuana, though. I've never seen anyone beat their wives in a stoned stupor, whereas a drunken stupor seems to be an excuse for it. *rolls eyes*

In the end, it's because it's illegal. Often, we assume that our government is operating on information we don't have. In the case of marijuana, I don't think that's true, and personally, if we had a road-side test that was accurate for marijuana, I think it should be legalized and taxed and regulated.

At least that would boost profits for Frito-Lay.

People can't get over the word "illicit" street drug. I have never heard of any one smoking tumble weed and getting in a car and killing any one. You are hurting your body by putting something foreign into your lungs when you smoke it but other than that .....If smoking a fattie a day keeps you sane than so be it . Is it not better than the chemicals doctors push at you daily? You can only fear something if you don't understand it. I would rather have someone high on tumble weed than drunk any day. As for smoking ciggs...everyone with a brain knows that will kill you in the end.Ciggs are full of man made chemicals not so with weed. The natives never had such problems with tobacco but look at what big business did to it so please don't **** with legalizing marijuana because the chemicals will be put to that too.

Marijuana was made illegal for tax reasons. Its been demonized ever since. Not that Marijuana is harmless, but its so much less harmful than alcohol or tabacco.......two industries that send a lot of money to the gov't.

Because marijuana is illegal you make anyone who uses it a criminal. That causes people to put themselves into some scary situations to get it....and you have to wonder why you would do that to yourself if the drug isn't addictive. But, when someone goes to jail, no matter what its for they are branded a criminal...and since we have hundreds of thousands of pot users in jail, these "criminal" acts are deemed dangerous. In fact the most dangerous part of pot is two-fold; the fact that its illegality means you might get busted, and on the other hand that all the kids seem to think its harmless.

Although all three are potentially deadly, tobacco doesn't affect your judgment when you use it, like alcohol or marijuana. So that rules out tobacco being worse than marijuana. When you get drunk a lot, you still can get sober the next day you drink (or at least after 2 days). But when you get high a lot, you will stay high for a long.. long .. time after you stop smoking marijuana.

These are the same people who believe everything they are told. They probably believe little elves live in trees and make cookies, there is a giant headed king somewhere in the world handing out hamburgers, or that Axe body spray will get you laid. They are hopeless conformers to whatever message "the powers that be" want them to hear. Someone told them weed is more harmful, and they never had the balls to find out on their own that it is not. It truly is sad when the youth of a great society like ours stops questioning EVERYTHING.

The ones that say that are the *UPPTY DO GOOD PEOPLE* that have had no life. They believe what they hear from the other uppty does people that don`t know what they are talking about. I would rather any of my kids be out partying stoned DRIVING than drinking and driving.. The people that think that all probably go out to their uppty do friends social gatherings and get wasted on cocktails and drive home drunk ..and 90 % of them probably smoke cigs and /or cigars.

The only reason it wouldn't be is because it isn't widely used. If as many people who drink alcohol got high at the same time we would have twice as many injuries and deaths because people would be twice as impaired, and our lawmakers want to save lives, not the other way around. Keep it illegal. That way morons will use a little more caution when using it.

I see the children are answering this question. Maybe when they have someone they are trying to raise and protect in this world, they will see why I wouldn't want ANY drugs available to irresponsible people.
