it means that they are ovulating and ready to accept a stud.(get pregnant) .only females go in to heat and in dogs the last week they will stand to be mounted.. then in dogs 56 weeks later you have puppies.. the same with cats but I'm not sure how long they carry... if you have a dog in heat be warned that they will have a discharge that could look bloody and you may want to make sure that they don't sit on the furniture or lay in the bed as they will stain everything!

Well, they are not "on" heat. They are "in" heat. Only females can get in heat. They can only get pregnant when they are in their heat cycle. There is usually a little(sometimes a lot of) blood. Dogs get their cycle two times a year. cat's do more often.

Well, certainly don't let her out. She is in heat, wanting males to come and mate with her. So you have to be careful or there will be puppies or kittens on their way

it's like the are having their period. they are able to get pregnant, and do the whole bleeding thing. it is grose, and it can last for a while. Not like people where it is just a week
