the computer only will show me the hour glass when i start it and i cant click on anything.. how do i get it to start on safe mode?

hold down f8 as you do a cold boot

Try starting it with the CD or Disk it came with. Make sure the bios is set to look or start up with the CD of disk first and that either of those has a boot ability. If you have a older, slower PC, it may take a long while to start if something has happened. Hopefully you didn't get a virus or someone didn't mess with the system settings. Using the start up that came with the pc should help you get started figuring out what's wrong.

Turn it off. Then turn it on. Press F8 repeatedly. A menu will appear. Choose safe mode as your option.
This will boot your pc without loading all the unnecessary programs and drivers.

He said he cant click on anything so how is he going to click on start? A good example of how little attention some people pay to the question.

Click on Start > Run > Type in msconfig and hit enter > Click on the BOOT.INI Tab in the upper right > Check the box that says, /Safeboot > Hit Enter > Restart.

Reboot the system and while it is booting continually (and quickly) tap the F8 key.
