I mentor a 15 year old girl who is really shy. I am trying to find some fun and fairly inexpensive activities (about $20 USD per time we do something) that we can do together. We've gone out to eat and shopping so far, but I want to find something more creative for us to do. I am with her once a week for about 3 hours or so. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I've forgotten what I liked to do at 15...I am 32 now. Thanks for any advice and/or help!!

Katie (the girl) is a phenominal flute player. She loves to give to others and rarely thinks of herself. We live in a large city so there would be lots of opportunities to be volunteer in...and we are looking into those. But, I also want some fun things for her to do because she is always doing so much for others. The more ideas you guys have the more it will help me. Thanks for what you've all said so far. I'll keep reading all your posts.
PS I do think she'd like the Special Olympics idea b/c her younger brother has autism and Down's Syndrome. Keep the ideas coming please!

Hey Blue_Bee...I love to mentor. It is fun for Katie but I have a blast too. She likes a little of everything, I think. Girly girl stuff, sports (she is a baseball fan...I do know that) but another thing I was thinking of since we have snow here is taking her ice skating with another friend or we live near the Largest Indoor Water Park in the country and I thought that would be fun. Do you think she'd like those ideas. Going out to play Paintball came up once...do 15 yso do that? Or like Gameworks (the huge video arcade and pizza joint. I just don't know!!!

ohh its so great that your mentoring...well, i'm 16...first of, what does she like to do? is she an outdoors kind of girl? more "stay at home" type? the regular bowling, swimming, playing sports, rock-climbing, walk in the park would be good....or go to an arts museum or the aquarium, planetarium, stuff like that...or just take her to your house and watch a movie, play cards, board games, or just sit and chat....i think its great that you're doing this...have fun!

Cross country is great I agree =] Archery is a brilliant sport that you can take up at any age, but if you are looking for something really physical it wouldn't be for you as you stand still shooting at a target (though a 12 dozen round means a lot of walking to target and back!) Rounders is also a really great game if you want a team sport, but you may not want to try for a team if you have never done it before. Triathlons are great fun to do, but require a lot of work for swimming, cycling and running, so you could perhaps start with a biathlon or a mini triathlon. Hope that helps! x

Some girls like laser tag, some don't. Most like to shop, and hang out at the mall. Have you asked if the young woman would like to help with Special Olympics? That can be fun, and a great learning time.

Volunteer. Walk dogs one week, read to kids another week... the possibilities are endless. It could really get her out of her shell if she has a worthwhile reason to.
Get a gang of your friends and play a night of floor hockey, or something equally "group" related.
Talk to the cosmetic counters at local drug stores and arrange for a free makeover - and then buy her one of the products she gets to try out! Nothing better for self esteem...
Go for a free trial of a hip hop dance class. Go watersliding. Visit a carnival. Go to the opera.
15 doesn't really know what they want or like. If she is shy, you should get "out there" with her to give her a chance!

Well Im 17 so IDK maybe I can help. What if you took her to the park just to swing and play like your both 10 or something. I like to do that sometimes and think. Its fun. you could always do her hair and make up if your into that sorta thing. Car rides are fun too. Just do anything. Get her out of the house. Im sure she'll enjoy anything really.

15yr old girls like to hang out and go to malls, do her hair and nails and make up. Make her pretty!! They like that ask her to bring one of her friends, go to the mall and try on gowns and high heels and older girls things. have fun.
