I just found fleas on my indoor cat. The two don't have any contact, but the chinchilla does have a ball that he runs around the house in. I had heard that fleas would not be able to survive in a chinchillis dense fur. Is this true?

Hey There = O )

Since all the other answer's are false I thought that I would assist you. I have three chinchilla's and two chihuahua's because I live in such a warm area fleas are very common.... Anyway last year after my dogs got fleas (first and only time, they are very disgusting) my immediate worry was that my chinchilla's may get flea's also.... After much research and a call to the vet to confirm the answer is NO chinchilla's cannot get flea's. This is because their hair is so thick that the flea's cannot get to the skin and therefore would not stay on an animal who they cannot feed off of. Hope this helps.

I would think that fleas could be on a chinchilla, but They'ld still have to come from somewhere. My 2 strictly indoor cats (no indoor/outdoor animals in years) suddenly "came down" with fleas 2 months ago after not having any for 4 years. Where did they come from? A darn mouse got in slightly before that, and that's my best bet. Have you had any mice in or under your house recently? THe only other chance was a visit from an in-law who has a dog but did not bring the dog. Not likely as that dog is on frontline year round.
Needless to say, the cats have been treated and the house has been cleaned and I'll keep this up as long as it takes. There are no signs of fleas now but I'm not letting my guard down. I'm always on guard against rodents and they rarely get in but they are an often neglected source of fleas.

yes, as far as I know chinchillis can get fleas. I would just keep a close eye on them and if you notice alot of scratching then take them to the vet immediately! I do not recommend buying anything from the pet store that states it will get of fleas from small animals!

The answer is no, as stated in a previous answer their fur is to thick for the fleas to feed. And please be very careful with the the ball chinchillas can quickly overheat and die from lack of ventilation.
