It is also a spiritual thing. We cry in the spiritual world as well. Out of Joy and Spiritual bliss. We don't have material bodied there but we still cry. Everything in this world is a perverted reflection of the absolute world. This world is called Maya or illusion and is temporary and full of misery. Here our emotions and sense pleasure is selfishly motivated where in the spiritual world it is all connected to our Love For God and all His parts and parcels. This knowledge is from the Vedic Knowledge where all questions can be answered if one is sincerely seeking truth.

I think crying is both biological and cultural.
I took a biopsychology class, but can't remember learning about crying. I do remember that there were different chemical processes for different emotions.
I do specifically remember learning in another class that all cultures show the same signs of an emotion, such as laughter/smiling at something funny and crying when sad. What differed among cultures was what evoked the emotion. Different cultures identified different stimuli as funny or sad.

Tears that are shed for emotional reasons have a different chemical composition that do tears that we shed reflexively for lubrication and to flush irritants. The chemicals in emotional tears may be a purging of certain proportional quantities of our body's chemicals in order to maintain emotional balance. Also, the more complex a specie's nervous system, the more capable it is of emotional tears, something related to higher levels, psychologically, of self-awareness.
