This started on a plane ride in 1963. Merv Griffith and his wife were discussing the recent scandals in game shows. His wife joked, "Why not just give them the answers to start with?"
She was kidding, but the thought struck Merv right between the eyes.
She said, "79 Wistful Vista".
And Merv replied, "What is Fibber McGee and Molly"s address?"
This is where and when that rule was established - before the game show ever aired.
