Our goldfish recently died so we replaced him with a beta fish (better for fishbowls), but I still have a ton of goldfish food left over. Can I use that for him til it's gone? Or is there special food for betas?

Contrary to what others have stated here you can feed your betta goldfish food.

While there are foods specifically made for betta's which are designed to give them the optimal protein breakdown goldfish food will not hurt them.

no, bettas need betta food. they could deal with general tropical food, but betta food is made specially for them to optimize health. most bettas prefer pellets, which also help keep the water from getting cloudy. as a treat you can feed him freeze dried blood worms a few times a week.

also, NO FISH should be kept in a bowl. it is cruel. bettas, just like any other fish, produce waste. therefore, just like any other fish, bettas NEED a filter. without a filter levels of ammonia, and nitrate build up super fast. it's also hard to keep pH where it should be. no to mention bettas are TROPICAL fish, they need temps around 75-80degrees. this is impossible to obtain in a bowl unless you always keep your house at 80degrees. why not get your betta a cheap 5 gallon tank, a filter, a heater and some plants? he'd be much happier and it doesn't really take up more room than a bowl.

or, you could get a 10gallon tank and put a few other tropical fish in with him. a tiny school of colorful fish looks beautiful paired with a betta. it is a common misconception that bettas can't be kept with any fish. males can't be kept with other bettas, females CAN be kept with other females, and males can be kep t with most slower, passive tropical fish. as long as the other fish don't have flowy fins that could be mistaken for a betta he will do fine with them and you'd actually have to watch out for the other fish nipping his fins more than him attacking them. good tank mates include slower tetras tetras tend to be fin nippers, so if they're slow the betta can still get away, fast ones will bully bettas), mollies, platies, swordtails, ect...

so PLEASE reconsider the bowl.

Goldfish food for goldfish.
Sheep food for sheep.
Cat food for cats...sense the pattern

Is the leftover food still sealed? If so,try taking it back to the pet store. Or, even better, donate the leftover food to a local school that has a goldfish or 2.

He may eat it, but it's not very healthy, and the undigested portion will fouls his water. Betta are carnivores, while goldfish are omnivore with a heavier need for veggies. So a good goldfish food is a bad betta food.

there is special food for betas. I've used goldfish food when I ran out of beta food. I don't know if it's good or bad for them. But, my beta survived. It's die hard anyway. They are very hard to kill

Its possible...my moms beta is EXTREMELY picky and refuses to eat food espacially for Beta fish..she'll taste it..and spit it out and refuses to eat the rest. The only food she'll eat is Tropical Fish flakes.

Put a small amount of flakes and see if she eats them. If she wolfes them down, then she likes them. if not, try something else.

I fed a beta goldfish food (tropical food) for over a year he did fine. If you buy him some frozen bloodworm and alternate his feedings he will love you.

It depends, some bettas are picky, whilst my bettas in my tank eat tropical flakes, but my other one refuses. It is not THAT expensive to buy some food for your bettas health? If you cannot afford it, really, don't get it...

I used to feed one of my old bettas general food for tropical fish, and he had no problem eating it. They can be picky though, so you have to be careful. If you try it and he's not eating it, stop feeding it to him. Now I feed my current betta special food for him and he loves it.
