Why was the Florida territory so important to Spain and the United States?

I'm talking about back then like in 1812ish (around there)......

Actually whoever owned Florida controlled the Caribbean and the gulf coast. It was a port state that was perfect for setting up blockades when ever trouble showed. It was the perfect place to control shipping out of the New Orleans port. It was the best set-up for control and power.
