There is a good explanation here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matrix_inverse#Analytic_solution

You will have to know what the cofactors of the determinant of the matrix are. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cofactor_%28mathematics%29#Cofactors

It can get pretty messy.

short solutions: a million. There are "formulae" for inverting n x n matrices and can be chanced on on the internet and such for n as much as approximately 12. however the formulation get surprisingly brutal for hand calculation and are in many cases only good for programming desktops or ASICs or stuff to do it. (occasion: you have some gadget you're designing that desires to invert 10 x 10 matrices all day long. you could desire to layout a custom chip to do it making use of the formulation for 10 x 10 inverse.) 2. No. You maximum truthfully can no longer invert singular (determinant = 0) or non-sq. matrices. partly by definition (the non-sq. area) and partly by straightforward arithmetic (you will get a divide-by-0 with formulation, or an irreducible matrix by the matrix augmentation approach). wish this facilitates.
