I think that it hinders the ability or willingness to know someone further. If you look at someone and assume that they are the stereotype of whatever group they may belong to (racial, religious, career, etc.) I find that, once people assume they know you because of these stereotypes, they have less desire to know the real you.

This is a loaded and ambiguous question. We all stereotype to some extent or another whether we admit it or not. Specific stereotyping is wrong as in making fun of someone because they are this or not that. Also, hating someone because of their skin color, racial background or religious preference is wrong. There are other stereotypings (profiling) that are beneficial to society like an APB put out by the police for s specific looking individual. People think this is wrong but if you think about it you'll realize that it is not wrong. This is a very simplified example but if a crime was committed by a tall blonde Chinese woman (remember this is just an example, it could be anyone) then wouldn't you want the police to stop ALL tall blonde Chinese women or should they stop everyone so no one "feels" profiled. Think about it.

I don't think we can help it. I think it's wrong and I wish we could help it but I don't think we in general can help it. There may be some out there that say they can, but for the most part, we can't. And stereotyping, though wrong, isn't always a negative thing. A lot of people look at anyone who wears glassess as smart usually. That is stereotyping that smart people wear glasses. You just can't help it, it all depends on how you were raised and your environment. Unfortunately, as long as we all have our own opinions it will never change, (although I do like people thinking I'm smart because of my glasses!)
