I'm graduating with my second degree (I'm a designer) this May and I was wondering when the appropriate time is to send out resumes. How far in advance should I send them out and how many would you rec. sending?

March or April would be appropriate, check with your school job placement department. Send out as many as you can. Also remember to post your job with electronic sources such as Monster etc. You will need a scannable resume because many places do not even except hard copy resumes anylonger. As a designer you are going to need to get your foot in the door and show your portfolio. It may be wise to design an electronic portfolio for distance applications. Alwasy mention that you have a portfolio that you would like to share during an interview.

Contact your school's placement office when school resumes in January. This is a good question for them. The placement office may have job fairs scheduled. Also, some companies may be interviewing on-campus.
The people in the placement office may have a sense of how the employment winds are blowing in your particular major and how long it may take you to find a job.

I think you could send the resumes out in April and I would send out at least 50.
