Theater is not important to society. It is not important enough at least. Theater certainly should be important to society, but it is lower on the artistic hierarchy than it should be, probably for financial reasons. Compare a play to a movie, the play is a much more intimate and personal experience.

Drama is a reflection of humanity. It is a mirror that reflects our living condition. The best theatre is committed to serious exploration of the world around us.
Theatre is a living art that responds to changing societal norms, values, and mores. The best theatre finds common ground that we all walk, and pulls us into the play. This explains why 400 year old plays are still performed today. The universal themes have resonance across the ages.

It dictates who and what people are. Stop and think about how many movies/plays you have seen in your entire life, and ask yourself how they may have changed your behavior, thinking, ideas. Entire societies have been changed just because of a play's influence. If someone wants to get a message across, the easiest way to do it is with theatre because so many people watch it, whether it is on a stage or in a moviehouse.

Because playwrights can present new ideas to us in ways we can understand (usually haha!) They can put into words and actions what may be troubling us and our society that we haven't been fully able to voice until they do so. Theatre is art and communication.

It adds a sense of sophistication and an appreciation for basic simple entertainment. But with the quality of today's shows i don't think it has much impact at all.

• “Arts education has a measurable impact on youth at risk in deterring delinquent behavior and truancy problems while also increasing overall academic performance among those youth engaged in after school and summer arts programs targeted toward delinquency prevention.” (Americans for the Arts) – Children are able to focus their negative behavior into the positive world of theater and in turn do better in school and life
Young artists, as compared to their peers, are likely to:

Because theater represents a world that is unknown to us.
For example, we have fully appreciated and understood the literary pieces of shakespeare through stage play.
