how do you write DVD video quickly?

im currently trying to burn some family videos onto DVD but using nero it takes aslong to encode the file as it is to watch it if not longer is there any quicker way such as have the videos already in the required format or is there better software to write dvd video with?

you need to get yourself a video editing package ther are some free programs on the net,
then edit your clips and encode them into the format you want and burn them
