Smallville is the #1 rated show on the WB (or CW now), however you see very little publicity of the actors or the show. Any guess as to why?

That's a great question.

I suspect that part of it is that the former WB (now CW) remains a second tier network. As such the actors don't attract all that much attention from the media and thus receive less attention.

Also, in general the actors are pretty much newbies, with this being the first regular work they've done. The leads have generally only been in bit parts prior to this, or in made for TV movies.

And as far as publicity goes - they used to be in a lot of TV adds for the WB, but the show is so well established that I don't know that it needs much in the way of advertising.

At the same time, the WB/CW doesn't have the revenue to really advertise extensively. Adds are expensive, and with the show at number 1 already, adds aren't really necessary.

Just my .01

by being sci-fi, the show is dismissed by the mainstream, and the fans are visualized as rapid and willing to follow with out hype, while also generating underground buzz on our own, so the show is left to survive on the fans w/o network promos.

Its filmed in Canada removing the cast from LA, where the paparazzi are too busy snapping picks of Paris and Britney's uncovered 'bits', instead of focusing on talented actors like the cast. If it were LA based(please dear god never let it move) I'm sure at least one or 2 cast members would be sucked into that lifestyle ruining the show and their future.

CBS is the parent company of The CW. Thursdays night is the home for the CBS cash cow called "Survivor" they will not advertise a competitive show for the same time slot as Survivor (wouldnt be good for ad revenues). hope this helps.

It's not really a new show anymore. They already have a loyal fanbase, they could use the marketing money for a new show instead.
