what is a 'resin hit' and why does my son always talk about them?

Well, from my days as a teen...we'd normally refer to the black build up in bowls, bongs, *insert smoking device here* as resin. A 'resin hit' usually refers to smoking the left overs produced from smoking marijuana. Almost always a last resort when no pot is available.
